Bharmour

Bharmour is a beautiful town surrounded by high lush green mountains located at a distance of 62 km from Chamba and 102 km from Dalhousie in Himachal Pradesh. Bharmour is  often referred as the land of Shiva because of belief that lord Shiva resides at mount kailash which is located in this area. Bharmour was also  Known as Brahmpur in the 6th century and was the seat of power of Chamba state for nearly 400 years till AD 920, when a new capital was founded at Chamba by Raja Sahil Varman. Bharmour is popular for its natural beauty, for chaurasi Temples and Manimahesh. Chaurasi Temples stand on a level area in center of Bharmour and are named after the 84 Siddhas who are believed to have meditated in here over thousand years ago. 

The tallest temple of the complex is Lord shiva temple built in Shikhara style of architecture. Shikhara (mountain peak) style refers to the rising tower in the hindu temple architecture. The temple has a Shivalingam on a raised platform. The other temple in Shikhara style is of Nar singh. Lord Vishnu in his avatar as Nar Singh has been cast vividly. There is a bronze Nandi of life size which stands facing the Manimahesh temple. Inscriptions on the pedestal of the bull and on the idols of Lakshna Devi and Ganesh date back to the reign of Raja Meru Varman. These idols are believed to be the work of master craftsman Gugga. There is a small water source called Ardh Ganga in a corner of the Chaurasi temple complex. Bathing in its water is considered religiously significant. The country around Bharmour is regarded as belonging to Shiva and is sometimes called Shiv-Bhumi. 

What to See at Bharour

Bharmani Devi Temple

 Just 4 kms above Bharmour is the hill temple of Bharmani Devi.  A trek to this temple refreshes the visitors as it unfolds the green woods before him. According to a local legend, the place Brahampura was older than Maru’s time and as per common belief this used to be the vatika (garden) of goddess Brahmani who used to reside where her shrine now stands on the ridge. Brahmaani Devi was having a son who was very fond of his pet choker or (birds). One day the choker was killed by a peasant and the son was shocked to death by this loose . Grief-stricken, Bharmani Devi also sacrificed by burying herself alive. The spirits of these trio dead souls started haunting the people awfully who raised Brahmani Devi to the status of deity and built her a temple. The people believe that the place was called Brahmpura after Brahamani Devi. 

Chaurasi Temple Complex

Chaurasi Temple complex commonly known as Chaurasi Mandir (Chaurasi temple), is the renowned for its significance and magnitude. Eighty-four ancient beautifully carved pillars has carefully festooned the temple complex. All these temples stand on a level area which call the Chaurasi after the 84 Siddhas who are believed to have meditated in Bharmaur over 1000 years ago. These Siddhas hailed from Kurukshetra and visited Manimahesh. Thus this temple complex obtained the name Chaurasi temple. The Chaurasi Temple Complex offers you a delightful, clean and a scenic view.

Manimahesh Lake

It is trackers paradise Manimahesh lake is situated at the altitude of 4000 mtrs. and a 1 days (approximately 12 Kms) track from Hadsar Village. The distance of  Bharmour to hadsar approx 12 Kms can be covered by a local Taxi. The beauty of the nature during this track can mesmerize any nature lover. The 360 degree view of high rise Himalayas, beautiful cedar forests, apple orchards on the way will never feel you tired. At the top, the frozen Manimahesh lake and Manimahesh Kailash on the back drop will hold your breath. It’s a must watch place on Bharmour Trip.

Weather of Bharmour

The weather is generally pleasant and cool all around the year. In summers that is May and June , the temperature sometimes may reach 30- 32°C. December and January are the coldest months and the temperature dips to -10°C at times. October and November are dry months but it is pretty cold also. December to February is very cold and snow bound and chilly months. Winter dresses are indispensable during this season.

How To Reach

By Air: The closest airport is at Gaggal (Kangra) near Dharamshala which is 190 km from Bharmour. Buses and Taxis are available.

By Rail: The nearest railway terminal is situated in Chakki Bank railway station CHKB and Pathankot railway station PTK which  are at distance of 180kms from Bharmour. Taxis and Buses  are available.

By Road: Bharmour is well connected by roads from chamba. It is 60 kms from the city of Chamba and approximately 200kms from Dharamshala at a height of 2195mts above  sea level.
